Entry Regulations

MISSION:
The mission of the KidzFlix Children’s Film Festival is to educate and inspire a younger audience by giving them the opportunity to see dynamic and unique films that are not available to the mainstream. Fairfield County gained the reputation of a well-known artist's colony and cultural center. Through the KidzFlix Children’s Film Festival, we will continue to preserve old roots and encourage spirited new growth in the culture and community we cherish.

ENTRY:  Submit an entry by sending the following materials to the Festival, postmarked by March 1 or April 1, 2010:

  1. Signed and completed 2010 Entry Form (one entry per form per film or video)
  2. A full-length preview DVD of the entry, clearly labeled with the tile of the production
  3. Entry fee in USD. U.S.-affiliated bank checks and international money orders should be made out to (X) and the title of the film/video(s) should be written on the check. To charge an entry fee to Visa, Master Card, American Express or Discover, please use the card number, expiration date, and signature. See Entry Form for details.
  4. Production information, including cast and credits
  5. Brief biographies of producers, director and principle actors
  6. Two high-quality images from the production. Images must be at least 300 dpit. These may be emailed to rrueda@KidzFlix.org  as .jpegs or .tifs or sent by regular mail. Director photo. This may be emailed to as jpegs or tifs or sent by regular mail.
  7. A press kit, posters, or other promotional materials if available for marketing purposes

    ENTRY FEE:  The entry fee will be waived for submissions produced by children aged 6-18. For all others, the entry fee is as follows:
    For entries postmarked by March 1, 2010, the early entry fees apply:

    1. Short film or video (under 60 minutes):  $40.00 USD
    2. Feature-length film or video (60 minutes or longer): $80.00 USD

    For entries postmarked after March 1 but before April 1, 2010, the late entry fees apply:

    1. Short film or video (under 60 minutes):  $60.00 USD
    2. Feature-length film or video (60 minutes or longer):  $100.00 USD
    3. Methods of payment include:  US –affiliated bank check, credit card (MasterCard, Visa, Discover, and American Express), or international money order.  All checks can be made out to X and should include the title of the production (s) be entered.  If paying by credit card, please note the entry fee will appear as X charge on your credit card bill. Please note that the entrée fee is non-refundable.

    ELIGIBLE FILMS AND VIDEOS

    1. The Festival accepts both live-action and animated submissions, on film and on video
    2. All entries submitted must be suitable for children ages 18 and under.
    3. All films and videos whose original language is not English must be subtitled or dubbed in English. Dialogue lists or scripts are not acceptable as a substitution for this rule.

    DEFINITION OF PROGRAMMING CATEGORIES (Refer to this when filling out the “production information” portion of the entry form)

    1. FEATURES AND SHORTS: Productions of 60 minutes or longer are considered features. Productions of less than 60 minutes are considered shorts.
    2. FILMS AND VIDEOS:  A production is a FILM if it is finished in 16mm or 35mm. A production is a VIDEO if it is finished on videotape or digitally produced on video or if it is only available on video (BetaSP NTSC).
    3. LIVE ACTION AND ANIMATED PRODUCTIONS: In the event that a production includes both live-action cinematography and animation, please identify (on the entry form) the category in which it should compete.
    4. DOCUMENTARY PRODUCTIONS:  If KidzFlix receives a substantial number of documentary entries, there may be a separate competition category for documentaries. Otherwise, a documentary submission will compete in the category selected on the Entry Form. A production is considered a documentary if it takes as its subject actual people, places, and events and presents them in a non-fictional context.
    5. CHILD-PRODUCED PRODUCIONS:  Films and videos that have been produced by children 6-14 are considered to be “child-produced.”  An adult supervisor is allowed; however, the entire film/video must be conceived and produced by children with minimal adult input.  Child-produced films and videos must match the Festival criteria outlined in item 7 below.

    SELECTION COMMITTEE: A selection committee comprised of the Festival committee, filmmakers, educators, and children screens entries received by the Festival in their entirety. The Selection Committee approves films and videos for Festival participation and for competition.

    CRITERIA

    Criteria for selection:

    1. The action of the film should be authentic, child-driven and the content should speak positively to children of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
    2. Films and videos submitted to KidzFlix should be made for, rather than about children
    3. Film content should be creative, highly original, and demonstrate artistic and technical mastery
    4. Content should provide strong role models for boys and girls

    Criteria for non-acceptance of films into the festival include:
    1. Excessive or gratuitous violence, nudity or profanity
    2. Content that advocates and supports racial, cultural, religious or gender bias
    3. Films and videos may also be disqualified for technical or procedural reasons:
    4. Any film or tape not subtitled or dubbed into the English language (This is enforced for both submission and Festival screening purposes. Scripts or dialogue lists may not be sent as a substitution for this rule)
    5. Films and videos that are purely educational or instructional in nature
    6. Films and videos that are intended primarily for an adult audience


    NOTIFICATION OF FESTIVAL STATUS: The Festival will inform all entrants no later than the April 10, 2010, whether their submission have been accepted. Preview DVDs, tapes and support materials of all films submitted for consideration cannot be returned.

    FESTIVAL FORMAT OF FILMS AND VIDEOS SELECTED: For Festival screening, we are able to screen a wide range of formats: 35mm, NTSC BetaSp, DVD (NTSC, PAL and region coded DVD), and DigiBeta (NTSC and PAL). The Festival format that you indicate on the entry form must be the format that you provide for screening. However, to allow for multiple screenings, the Festival may request you to provide an additional format.
